Solar power is on the rise. Many technical improvements have made solar cells quite efficient and affordable lately. A huge drawback continues to be within the fact that solar panels produce no energy if it is raining. When it comes to conversion of solar technology to electrical energy, the team through the Ocean University of China (Qingdao) and Yunnan Normal University (Kunming, Asia) developed a highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cell. In order to allow rainfall to create electrical energy too, they coated this mobile with a whisper-thin film of graphene.

Graphene is a two-dimensional type of carbon in which the atoms are fused into a honeycomb arrangement. This occurrence encouraged scientists working together with Qunwei Tang to utilize graphene electrodes to obtain energy from impact of raindrops. Raindrops aren't clear water. They contain salts that dissociate into negative and positive ions. The positively charged ions, including salt, calcium, and ammonium ions, can bind towards graphene area. At point of contact between the raindrop in addition to graphene, water becomes enriched in positive ions plus the graphene becomes enriched in delocalized electrons. This leads to a double-layer made of electrons and positively charged ions, an attribute called a pseudocapacitor. The difference in possible connected with this occurrence is enough to create a voltage and present.
